What’s the ETA on the UK’s ETA system?

You’ve got your ticket to the UK, an up-to-date passport, and your bags are packed. But, did you get your Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)?

Beginning November 27, 2024 eligible travelers from non-European countries, such as the United States, can apply for an ETA.

So, whether crossing the pond is a regular trip for you, or you’re heading there for the first time, here’s everything to know about the ETAs and what it means for you.

What is the Electronic Travel Authorization system?

Similar to the ESTA system in the United States, the Electronic Travel Authorization system is a digitized permission to travel in the UK. The system is meant to give them more control over potential threats and obtain more accurate data on people entering or passing through.

Who will need an ETA?

Eligible non-Europeans can apply beginning November 27, 2024 and will be required to have an ETA to travel to the UK beginning January 8, 2025.

How do I get an ETA?

The process of getting an ETA will be online or via app. You’ll need to make sure to have the following before proceeding:

  • A valid passport - no photocopies or digital passports
  • Email access
  • A credit card, debit card, Apple or Google Pay

You will need to upload or take photos of the passport and face of the person applying.

You will not need to enter your travel details.

Traveling with a group? Each person must apply for an ETA.

How long does the approval process take?

You can expect a response in your email inbox you applied with within 72 hours of application. Occasionally, it can take longer.

Will I have to apply for an ETA every time I go to the UK?

No. The ETA will be valid for 2 years, and visitors will be able to stay for up to 6 months. You must reapply if you get a new passport.

How much will an ETA cost?

The cost will be £10.
